Piet Retief

Piet Retief is a town in the timber-growing region of Mpumalanga, its primary economic activity is paper production being home to Mondi, PG Bison and Mpact Paper Mills.
Piet Retief is situated along the N2 between Vryheid in KZN and Ermelo which makes it a convenient stop over for those heading to the coastal areas, as it offers restaurants and convenience centres on the main route.

THINGS TO DO IN THE AREA:
The Grey Rhebok Hiking Tails offer 5 different trails from 300m to 11 kms. The 1st 3 trails are moderate and perfect for the whole family, while the other 2 are more demanding, you will need a 4x4 to get to the start of the hike. Expect cycads, proteas, waterfalls, a pom-pom forest, rare tree orchids, clear water pools and for the very fortunate, you may spot a grey rhebok.
The 2km pink trail is a gentle streamlined walk to a waterfall adorned with tree ferns.
The 4 km yellow trail is up the mountainside to another magnificent waterfall.
The 6km orange trail plunges into a gorge, be prepared for a series of boulder hopping, the breath-taking waterfall at the end is worth it.
The 7km red trail is a steep hike up the mountainside and heads down into a beautiful kloof scattered with tree fern, take a breather here before heading up the escarpment back to camp.
The 10km white trail is a steep hike through an indigenous forest alongside streams and orchids.
For a weekend of camping, hiking and mountain biking, this is a place to explore.
