Swellendam at a glance

Swellendam is the third oldest magisterial town in South Africa and was rated the best South African Municipality in 2015. Swellendam is filled with historic buildings such as the Drostdy Museum and the beautiful NG Church, both of which are well-known landmarks in the town.

Swellendam is a peaceful town, surrounded by nature reserves and beautiful agriculture. 

It is also a popular tourist destination, whether you come for the day, the weekend or longer, Swellendam will provide you with an unforgettable experience. 

Situated in the Western Cape Province, Swellendam is approximately 220km from both Cape Town International Airport and George and is found nestled quietly at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains and the Breede River. It's an attractive town with the Koornlands River running through it and is close to the stunning Tradouw Pass.  
Swellendam boasts one of the most well maintained and well managed government hospitals in South Africa. There are 3 excellent private GP practices, 3 pharmacies and numerous dentists, optometrists and allied health professionals in town.
Swellendam has a primary school that is under excellent management and is constantly expanding. There are also two outstanding high schools in town, one of which has a remedial approach to teaching. All three schools also provide boarding facilities. 

Swellendam boasts a large variety of activities to keep the whole family entertained, including wine tours, hiking and mountain biking, fine dining or indulgent liqueur and preserve tastings and berry picking.

Travel back in time at the Drostdy, landmarked by a giant wild fig tree where award winning Chef and owner, David Godin, will delight your culinary senses with French influence oozing from each sumptuous dish. Tiptoe through the magical story book forest and meet Faeries at The Faerie Sanctuary. The local Flower Farm is a sight to behold. Become one with nature in the Marloth Nature Reserve and Bontebok National Park, a nature lover's dream with an abundance of wildflowers and Fynbos to be seen. 

A picturesque 9-hole golf course with magnificent views of the Langeberg Mountains is just outside the town. Other exciting things to do include canoeing, water-skiing, boat cruises, swimming, hiking/cycling to stunning mountain pools, all at the Buffeljags Dam. For a bird's eye view take a scenic flight to savour the beauty of Swellendam.
