Holiday Safety Tips

With so much going on during the festive season and so many distractions, it's crucial to be exceptionally vigilant during this time. Here are a few basic reminders to stay safe this season:

At Home

  • If you're going away, tsk your neighbors to collect your mail. A full post box is a sure way to signal that your home is unattended.
  • Make sure your home isn't in darkness, but don't keep the outdoor lights on all day.
  • Only those you trust should be informed when you are going on vacation.
  • Make sure you have burglar bars and that your doors lock securely.

While Shopping

  • Don't carry a lot of cash with you.
  • Don't leave expensive items in your trolley while shopping.
  • Keep your purse or wallet hidden.
  • Keep your wallet in your front pocket.
  • Don't display too much money, especially in large amounts.
  • Keep your children by your side at all times, holding their hand and always go to the bathroom with them.

At Night

  • Keep an eye out for anyone or anything that seems off.
  • To travel home, take a route you are comfortable with and are aware of.
  • Close the windows and lock the doors.
  • If you are hit from behind, go to the next safe location or the police station.
  • Never leave your keys in the ignition while you open your gates.
  • Drive around the block or get out of the car and lock the doors instead of waiting for your passengers.
  • Never let someone hitch a ride.
  • Don't leave the vehicle to help someone who appears to be in need. Let the cops know.

On the Road

  • Buckle up if you're taking a road trip.
  • Avoid drinking and driving.
  • keep a safe distance behind.
  • Avoid engaging in activities that drain your energy and make you more tired.
  • Get at least six hours of sleep the night before.
  • Avoid traveling when you're upset or under stress.
  • Plan your journey, including the route you'll take and the locations of your overnight stops.
  • Make sure your vehicle is safe to drive.
  • Make that you have a jack, a spare wheel, and that both are in good shape.
  • Ensure that the boot is properly closed and that your luggage is inside.
  • Every two hours, pause and take a 15-minute break.
  • Drive carefully between 1am and 5am.
  • If you're worn out or tired, pull over to a safe stop and rest!

When at the Beach or Swimming in Pools

  • Children should always go swimming with an experienced adult.
  • Only swim if there is a lifeguard on duty.
  • If a lifeguard is present, wait until they give the all-clear before diving in.
  • Never push anyone into a pool or sprint along the edge.
  • Avoid using diving boards in the pool.
  • Never let anyone swim alone, regardless of age.
  • Have a designated water watcher who is in charge of keeping tabs on everyone when entertaining a gathering of kids or adults.
  • Never let kids go unsupervised in any body of water!
