Sandton

Sandton is rated as one of the most up-market areas in South Africa. It was established as a separate municipality in 1969 and the name was derived from two suburbs, namely Bryanston and Sandown. These properties offered the original homeowners smallholdings with stand sizes of about 2 hectares (5 acres). Today, many of these large stands have either been subdivided or developed into high density apartments. Sandton City, the shopping centre and commercial tower, opened in 1973 and has been the core of commercial development in the area. Liliesleaf Farm, where Nelson Mandela lived in the early 1960s and where many leading political activists were arrested in 1963, is in Sandton.
